    High Numbers

The common denominators for D3S photographers are likely to be the need for speed and the desire to...well, practically see in the dark. Simply put, this new Nikon D-SLR provides sports shooters, photojournalists, nature, wildlife and wedding photographers new levels of performance.

The 12.1-megapixel D3S features a new FX-format sensor designed specifically for high ISO, low-noise performance; speedy capture and transfer of images; and the demands of high-quality 24 fps HD video with stereo sound capability.

The D3S extends the possibilities of image making with an astounding ISO range of 100 to 102,400. That's not a misprint—it's 102,400 ISO capability for stills and video clips. The camera's normal ISO range is 200 to 12,800; expanded settings boost that range from 100 at the low end to (here's that number again) 102,400 at the high end. Which means the D3S can literally pick up details the eye has to struggle with and produce at the top end of the ISO range not the green-tinged images of night-vision goggles, but accurate and by every measure acceptable color photographs.

What that means in practical terms is an extended range of time and circumstances for taking pictures. Early morning wildlife, darkened concert stages, shadowy sports arenas, candlelit wedding scenes—not only possible, but downright commonplace.

The D3S's quickness comes into play in all areas where speed matters. It starts up instantly, focuses in microseconds and boasts a frame advance of nine fps at full FX resolution. And the camera's larger buffer means more frames per burst of the frame advance.

For the photojournalist whose assignment now includes delivering video as well as stills, the D3S provides broadcast-quality video, with ambient or interview sound from the camera's built-in mic, or optional mic plugged into the stereo input port.

The D3S—built for speed, quality and versatility. Complete details are at NikonUSA.com, but the best way to appreciate the camera's capabilities is to pay a visit to your local photo dealer. Tell him to turn out the lights.
